Finding the Right Counseling Supervisor: Someone Who Gets You
July 6, 2025
Written by: Lindsay Mieden, MA, LPC-S
Choosing a counseling supervisor isn’t just about ticking off credentials—it’s about finding someone who challenges you, supports you, and doesn’t make supervision feel like an awkward job interview every week. You want someone who gets you, someone who pushes you to grow but also makes the journey feel meaningful. So, how do you find that person?
1. Do They Actually Know Their Stuff?
Let’s start with the basics:
Are they legit? Make sure they have the right licensure and experience for your field.
Have they worked with populations you’re interested in? If you’re passionate about trauma-informed care and they only talk about CBT worksheets, it might not be the best fit.
Do they make ethics feel important, not scary? A good supervisor teaches you to navigate ethical dilemmas with confidence, not fear.
2. Can You Be Yourself Around Them?
Supervision is where you bring your doubts, your messy cases, and those “Did I totally mess that up?” moments. If you feel like you have to impress them 24/7, that’s a red flag. A strong supervisor will:
Let you admit mistakes without judgment.
Encourage self-reflection rather than just giving you “right” answers.
Challenge you in a way that feels constructive, not demoralizing.
3. Are They Actually Accessible?
Some supervisors disappear like a magician when you need guidance. Look for someone who:
Responds when you have urgent questions (within reason—no midnight crisis calls).
Takes time to offer thoughtful feedback rather than vague “You’re doing fine” responses.
Respects your time and doesn’t cancel supervision last-minute constantly.
4. Are They Invested in Your Growth?
A great supervisor doesn’t just focus on today—they help set you up for your future career. Ask yourself:
Do they help you find your unique style as a therapist? You don’t need to be their clone.
Do they offer networking or career advice? A little guidance can go a long way.
Do they seem genuinely invested in your success? If they act like supervision is just another task on their to-do list, that’s a problem.
5. Red Flags to Watch Out For
If you notice any of these, run (or at least reconsider):
Dismisses your concerns instead of helping you work through them.
Makes supervision feel like a lecture instead of a conversation.
Pushes their own therapy style without room for exploration.
Seems disengaged, distracted, or uninterested in your growth.
Final Thoughts
Finding the right supervisor is a game-changer. It’s about more than checking off requirements—it’s about mentorship, personal growth, and setting the foundation for your career. The best supervisors challenge you, support you, and remind you why you started this journey in the first place.
